A hardware port this refers to any one of the ports that are on the back of a computer where devices can be hooked up e.g a keyboard, mouse or printer.

A parallel port is a type of interface used to connect peripherals, it connects external devices like a printer, to the computer.

A USB stands for Universal Serial Bus, it is an external bus that supports data transfer rates of 12 Mbps. A single USB port can connect up to 127 peripheral devices.

Serial ports have a wider range of acceptable forms of data for transfer, and can work with remote control devices, external hard drives and smart-phone devices. The main difference between parallel and serial ports is that serial ports transfer data in two directions.
